The Dangers of Ozempic
Ozempic is a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication designed to lower blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin, reducing the production of glucose in the liver and slowing the emptying of the stomach. Ozempic may also help lower the risk of major cardiovascular incidents in adults with known heart disease risk factors like strokes and heart attacks. Research has also shown the drug helps people to lose weight, which is important for patients who have type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately, research has revealed that semaglutide medications may cause severe side effects like stomach paralysis, bowel obstructions and blood clots, especially among patients who:
- Use the medication for a long time
- Use Ozempic for weight management
- Take a high dose
Some of the other severe health issues connected to Ozempic and other semaglutide medications include:
- Injury to the esophagus
- Ileus, which means the intestines lose the ability to contract and pass waste
- Pancreatic cancer
- Pulmonary aspiration
- Disorders related to malnutrition
- Vomiting
These problems may be accompanied by some combination of the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Bloating
- Cramping
- Acid reflux and heartburn
- Lack of appetite and malnutrition
- Severe dehydration
Research on the Dangers of Ozempic
There is a growing body of research about the potential dangers of Ozempic, especially among patients taking the drug for weight loss.
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in October 2023 found a higher risk of pancreatitis, gastroparesis and bowel obstructions in patients taking GLP-1 agonists compared to patients taking bupropion-naltrexone:
- The risk of pancreatitis was about nine times higher in GLP-1 patients
- The risk of bowel obstructions was 4.22 times higher
- The risk of gastroparesis was 3.67 times higher
Researchers noted there are a lot of anecdotal reports about these severe side effects.
Another study from January 2022 connected the following medical issues to GLP-1 agonist medications like Ozempic:
- Serious abdominal pain
- Abdominal distension
- Indigestion
- Acid reflux
There was also a study published in December 2022 that revealed a significant association between gastrointestinal adverse events and semaglutide. Compared to liraglutide and dulaglutide, semaglutide was associated with the highest risk of:
- Pancreatitis
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
Update On Ozempic Lawsuits
Ozempic litigation is in its early stages, but things are progressing quickly. The first lawsuit alleging a failure to warn consumers about the risks was filed in August 2023.
Less than six months later, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) hear arguments for a motion to create a GLP-1 MDL. The motion was successful, and cases were consolidated under U.S. District Judge James D. Cain, Jr. in the Western District of Louisiana. As of May 1, 2024, there were 87 pending cases in this MDL.
